Diabetes in Australia

Another 5 minutes.
Another Australian diagnosed.

Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic health condition in Australia.

Around 311 people are diagnosed with diabetes every day.

That’s one person every 5 minutes.

Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge confronting Australia’s health system.

Around 1.9 million Australians have diabetes.

This includes all types of diagnosed diabetes (1.4 million known and registered) as well as undiagnosed type 2 diabetes (500,000 estimated).

And for every person diagnosed with diabetes, there is usually a family member or carer who also ‘lives with diabetes’ in a support role.

Last year, more than 100,000 Australians developed diabetes.

And today, one in every four hospital beds in Australia is taken by a diabetes related condition.

Diabetes: a worldwide pandemic

It is estimated that 463 million people worldwide are living with diabetes.

This number is expected to rise to 578 million people living with diabetes worldwide by 2030.

In 2013 diabetes caused 5.1 million deaths globally.
