NDSS

If you are diagnosed with diabetes we recommend you register with the NDSS.

The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS) is an initiative of the Australian Government.

It is administered with the assistance of Diabetes Australia and Diabetes SA administers the scheme in South Australia.

The NDSS supports people with diabetes by providing timely, reliable and affordable access to NDSS support services and products.

If you are registered with the NDSS you can access a range of free diabetes self-management education and support programs.

NDSS events include short face-to-face workshops, and comprehensive education programs covering topics such as blood glucose monitoring, healthy eating, physical activity, emotional wellbeing, minimising your risk of health problems and much more. See all NDSS events.

Registration with the NDSS is free to all eligible individuals and only needs to be done once.

Access to blood glucose testing strips

As of 1 July 2016, the Australian Government changed access to subsidised blood glucose monitoring strips for people with type 2 diabetes who are not using insulin.

If you have type 2 diabetes and do not use insulin, you will be required to present a completed ‘Blood Glucose Monitoring Strip Six Month Access’ form.

This form must be signed by your health professional and presented every six months to continue to access subsidised blood glucose monitoring strips through the NDSS. However, the requirement to submit a ‘Blood Glucose Monitoring Strip Six Month Access' form every six months is current suspend during COVID-19.

COVID-19 and the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS)

We recognise that people with diabetes and their families may be concerned about their risk, and also the availability of their diabetes medicines and NDSS products and supplies. Most people are continuing to order and receive their NDSS products and diabetes medicines as usual. This ensures enough products are available for everyone. For the latest information on COVID-19 and the NDSS, please visit the NDSS website at ndss.com.au/coronavirus-covid-19-information/. If you need a bit of extra support, or if you are struggling with your diabetes management during this time, please don’t hesitate to call the NDSS Helpline on 1800 637 700 to speak to a health professional.

The National Diabetes Services Scheme is an initiative of the Australian Government administered by Diabetes Australia.

The NDSS agent in South Australia is Diabetes SA.
