Type 1

Newly Diagnosed

Being diagnosed with diabetes can be overwhelming.

But 5 simple steps can help you get on track with managing your diabetes.

  • Step 1: Register with the NDSS
  • Step 2: Become a Member of Diabetes SA
  • Step 3: Learn about diabetes and how to manage it
  • Step 4: Create a support network
  • Step 5: Set yourself some goals

People with type 1 diabetes can live a successful life – but trying to balance all the requirements of diabetes management can be challenging.

Every step is a learning experience as you begin to understand how your body responds to different foods, physical activity and insulin.

There are many health professionals who can help you understand and manage your diabetes including an endocrinologist, diabetes educator, dietitian and psychologist.

Type 1 diabetes must be closely managed with daily care including:

  • Insulin injections or use of an insulin pump
  • Regularly monitoring blood glucose levels
  • Following a healthy eating plan
  • Participating in regular exercise

Doing these daily care activities will help you keep your blood glucose levels within target range and will help prevent both short-term and long-term complications.

Type 1 diabetes is a life-long condition. Yet with new technology and disease management initiatives diabetes is becoming easier to manage.
