Associate Professor Richard Young
Associate Professor Richard Young is a Senior Research Fellow within the Discipline of Medicine, University of Adelaide, based at the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI).
His research explores the effect of sweeteners on the gastrointestinal system and glucose absorption, assessing the overall impact on diabetes management. Associate Professor Richard Young attempted to shed some light on the often asked question of ‘sweetener vs sugar’?
Thomas Pretlove, Accredited Exercise Physiologist
Thomas Pretlove is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist working at Adelaide Exercise Physiology for nearly 10 years, with prior experience at Hampstead Rehabilitation Centre. Thomas specialises in areas of diabetes management and prevention, musculoskeletal assessment and ongoing rehabilitation.
Thomas discussed the benefits of exercise for people with diabetes and appropriate exercises to suit a range of mobility levels. How to motivate people to exercise, practical tips for exercising at home and referral pathways for people with chronic conditions.
Anissia Fairlie, Accredited Practising Dietitian
Anisia Fairlie is an Accredited Practising Dietitian working at Diabetes SA, with previous experience across private practice and aged care, working with a range of chronic conditions.
Anissia discussed the evidence for a range of dietary patterns that have been used in research to assist the management of diabetes. She explored their commonalities and determined which dietary patterns are associated with the best health outcomes.
