Latest edition (June 2022 – September 2022)

One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Diabetes SA is seeing the impact and outcomes of the education, health care services, membership support and community campaigns we run, and how they improve the lives of people living with or at risk of diabetes. As the fastest growing chronic health condition in the world, diabetes affects over 1.4 million people in Australia alone. On pages 6 and 7, we have highlighted some of the impacts and outcomes of our work under the strategic pillars of Prevention, Detection, Management, and Research from July 2121 to May 2022.

These will be further expanded in the Association’s Annual Report in October 2022. Our front cover features Rosemary, who lives with type 2 diabetes, and Chelsey, who lives with type 1 diabetes. These inspirational women have shared their stories with us for the current fundraising appeal, an excerpt of which can be read on page 31. Your donation today will help others in the future, so please donate today. Our work is only possible because of your support.

As we approach National Diabetes Week, 10 – 16 July, we look forward to hosting the NDW seminar at the Adelaide Convention Centre 16 July, where we will address the lesser-known complications of diabetes. Learn more about the speakers on page 16. The Research Grants Program is in its third round, and after careful consideration, the Research Advisory Committee chose two applicants from ten outstanding submissions. Each researcher will receive $100,000 to further their vital work, so please read more about this on page 8. The recruitment for our AUS2PREVENT trial continues with enthusiasm. We have answered some of the questions we have been asked by the community and show you the team that will be the health coaches on page 10. You can read more about each coach in their bio on our website at diabetessa.com.au.

Winter is a time for comfort food, and I know myself the feeling of contentment I have at the aroma of a good roast in the oven, a hearty pie, or the delicious smell of a comforting dessert. On pages 22-25 we present some healthier alternative suggestions to mix and match and all you need to know to bring the winter comfort feeling to your table.

Despite the expansion of our services, products, and member offerings, including the introduction of an Exercise Physiologist, our Membership pricing increase has been kept at a nominal 3.5%. You can call us to ask about the price change by calling 1300 198 204 or visit the website diabetessa.com.au.

So please, sit back and enjoy reading your exclusive Member magazine.
